In the February 1st City Council work meeting, City Manager Benjamin Revees described to the council the various projects that the City staff are working on in preparation for next week’s multi-day budget retreat.
Current Projects
Most of these projects have a multi-million-dollar price tag:
1. New City Hall Building—Have you driven past Center Street and 100 South and wondered what is happening with that giant hole? That’s where the new City Hall will stand.
The City Hall building will consist of a large central structure with southern and western wings. It will have many functions, including being the new offices for the City Administration, meeting center for the seniors, and classrooms for the City Services Department to fill with activities.
1a. In conjunction with the construction of the new City Hall building, a nearby home, just south of the site will need to be eventually demolished, due to it shifting into the foundation hole of the City Hall.
1b. Another project associated with the City Hall is the purchase of new furnishings for the building, as well as the renovation of the old city hall, in preparation to return it to use as a Public Safety Headquarters.
1c. The City Administration is also looking forward to planning the future of the block that the new City Hall will sit on, hoping to make it a central fixture of the city.
2. Summit Ridge Irrigation Tank and Booster Station—In efforts to solve water issues that the residents of Summit Ridge have been experiencing, the city is installing a water tank and boosting station in the area.
3. Harvest View Sports Complex Phase 2—A parking lot, pickleball courts, restrooms, a concession stand, and field lighting is being installed on the Harvest View Sports Complex in Summit Ridge.
4. Center Street Storm Drainage—A federally funded project, between Main Street and 100 North, a curb and storm drain system will be installed.
5. Highland Drive & Canyon Road—Highland drive has recently been extended further west, but further development is needed in completing the project, such as fencing, a trail, and road surface work.
6. Cemetery upgrade Phase 2—Due to the completion of Phase 1 of the Harvest View Sports Complex, many soccer games were moved from the open field in the cemetery to that new park. With the space no longer occupied, the road in the cemetery was extended further to the west. Future plans show a Center Street vehicle access point and road to the memorials.
Planning Projects
The Administration and Staff are spending time and resources each week to gather information and draft proposals to develop plans for the City Council to approve.
These plans are used for future decision and policy making, such as zoning requests and allowed developments:
1. General Plan
2. Active Transportation Plan
3. Parks and Trails Master Plan
4. Sewer Master Plan—Budgeted, but not started.
Future projects
These projects have not begun, but plans are well in the works to make these a reality:
1. Debris Basins—Water basins, like dams, to prevent flooding and direct water and other debris from the canyon. Two projects are planned with this, a County basin, and a city basin.
2. Widen Main Street—The City wants to ease congestion along Main Street by burying the utilities, bringing in the sidewalks, and having two lanes to the east and west all the way through town.
Final Notes:
The City Manager explained that the city can do nearly anything, but it can’t do everything at the same time. He asked the City Council to consider what is important and valuable for the future of the City. He alluded that the Council was the City’s steering wheel and the City’s projects are the Council’s projects.
Is there a plan or drawing of the Harvest View Sports Complex available online for the public to see what the completed park will look like? Also will Phase 2 finish the park or will there be future phases necessary and if so when will the park be completed?
Thank you.
I’m not sure if there are any pictures on the website, but I have seen drawings presented in the City Council Meetings and the Community Services Department Board meeting.
There have also been talks about putting in baseball fields in at the park in the future.
Really, anything could be added afterwards as another phase it just depends on the desires of the Council.
Thanks for asking!
